Ascendant vs Sun sign vs Moon sign: Many people feel confused about three common terms in astrology: Ascendant sign, Sun sign and Moon sign. What do these signs actually mean and how are they different from each other?
In astrology these three signs represent three different aspects of a person. One describes how you appear to the world, one describes your core identity, and one describes your emotional mind.
Let us understand them one by one.
Ascendant Sign (Lagna)
The entire celestial space around the Earth is divided into twelve zodiac signs of 30 degrees each.
Because the Earth rotates continuously, different zodiac signs rise on the eastern horizon throughout the day. A new sign rises approximately every two hours.
The zodiac sign that is rising on the eastern horizon at the exact moment of birth is called the Ascendant or Lagna.
Astrologically, the Ascendant represents personality, physical appearance, behaviour and the direction of life. It also becomes the starting point of the entire birth chart because the arrangement of the twelve houses begins from the Ascendant sign.
Sun Sign
The Sun sign is the zodiac sign where the Sun was located on the day you were born.
The Sun remains in one zodiac sign for about one month, which is why many people born in the same period share the same Sun sign.
Astrologically, the Sun sign represents core identity, confidence, authority and sense of purpose. In Vedic philosophy the Sun is associated with the soul principle, which reflects a person’s inner vitality and leadership.
Moon Sign
The Moon sign is the zodiac sign where the Moon was positioned at the exact moment of birth.
The Moon moves quickly through the zodiac and changes its sign roughly every two to two and a half days.
Astrologically, the Moon sign represents the mind, emotions and the way a person internally experiences life. In Vedic astrology the Moon is extremely important because many predictive techniques are based on the Moon sign.
Understanding the Difference
These three signs describe three different layers of human personality.
The Ascendant sign shows how a person appears to the world and how they move through life.
The Sun sign reflects the core identity and personal authority.
The Moon sign represents the emotional mind and inner reactions.
Together, these three signs form the basic psychological foundation of a birth chart, helping astrologers understand how a person acts, thinks and feels.
